Chamonix packing list for families
Chamonix sits beneath Mont Blanc, and its cable cars and glaciers put families in serious mountain conditions any time of year. This list covers ski weeks and summer trips, plus the high-altitude extras both need.

Kristina's notes on Chamonix
- Chamonix's ski areas are spread along the valley and linked by buses and a small train. With kids, I choose lodging near the area we'll ski most, and for beginners I like the gentler slopes around Les Houches.
- The Aiguille du Midi cable car climbs above 12,000 feet, and it is cold and thin-aired at the top. Bring hats, gloves and sunglasses even in summer, and keep the visit short with little ones.
- Chamonix is a year-round trip. Summer brings the Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace glacier, easy family hikes and alpine lakes, so pack layers and sturdy shoes if you visit outside ski season.

What to wear in Chamonix with kids
Chamonix is more outdoorsy than glitzy, so practical layers win in every season. Even in July, the top of the Aiguille du Midi cable car sits above 12,000 feet and feels like winter, while the valley can be warm and sunny the same day.
For the grown-ups
- Waterproof shell jacket, rain, wind, and snow
- Light puffer jacket, for cable car summits
- Waterproof hiking boots, for trails and snowy streets
For the kids
- Fleece midlayer, layers under a shell
- Waterproof hiking shoes, muddy summer trails
- Warm hat and gloves, needed at the summits year-round
Don't forget
- Sunglasses for everyone, glacier glare is intense
- Ski goggles in winter, for ski days
- Small daypack, for layers you take off
