Finnish Lapland packing list for families
Lapland in winter is properly cold, and how well you layer decides whether kids last ten minutes or two hours on a sled. This list covers what to bring, and what you can usually borrow, for a cozy Arctic trip.
Kristina's notes on Finnish Lapland
- Many Lapland lodges and safari companies lend thermal overalls, boots and mittens for outdoor activities. Ask before you buy, and save the luggage space for good base layers.
- Santa season fills up early, especially the weeks just before Christmas. Late November and early December are usually quieter, and there's often snow on the ground by then.
- Plan around short days: outdoor activities in daylight, a long warm lunch, and aurora hunting after dinner. Little ones get cold faster than you'd think, so keep sessions short with warm-up breaks.
What to wear in Finnish Lapland with kids
Lapland in winter can drop to -4°F (-20°C) or colder, so the real trick is layering. Wool next to the skin, fleece in the middle, and a warm outer layer on top. Many resorts lend thermal overalls and boots, so check before you buy the bulkiest pieces.
For the grown-ups
- Merino wool base layers, the warmest first layer
- Fleece midlayer, traps heat under your coat
- Insulated winter boots, rated for deep cold
For the kids
- Merino base layers, warm even if damp
- Insulated snowsuit, for sledding and husky rides
- Waterproof mittens, warmer than gloves
Don't forget
- Wool socks, two pairs a day
- Neck gaiter, for wind on snowmobiles
- Hand warmers, for northern lights nights
