Kerala packing list for families
Kerala moves from humid backwaters to cool tea hills to warm beaches, often in one trip. Packing breathable, modest clothes plus a light layer is what makes it work for families.

Kristina's notes on Kerala, India
- US citizens need an Indian visa, and the e-visa works well for tourism. Each child needs their own, so I apply on the official site well ahead and double-check that photos meet the rules.
- I like a loop of Kochi, a night or two on a backwaters houseboat, the cool tea hills of Munnar, and a beach to finish. The drive up to Munnar is winding, so I pack motion sickness remedies.
- Temples and churches expect modest dress, and some temples are closed to non-Hindus. Loose, long cotton or linen works for both the heat and respect, and it keeps mosquitoes off at dusk.
What to wear in Kerala with kids
Kerala is hot and humid all year, and temples ask everyone to cover shoulders and knees. Light cotton and linen that covers up while staying cool is the answer, plus a rain layer from June to September during the monsoon.
For the grown-ups
- Linen pants, cool and temple-appropriate
- Loose cotton tunic tops, cover shoulders without heat
- Lightweight scarf, for temples and sun
For the kids
- Lightweight cotton pants, covered knees for temples
- Breathable T-shirts, dry fast in humidity
- Sport sandals, for boats and puddles
Don't forget
- Packable rain jacket, monsoon showers come fast
- Slip-on shoes, shoes come off at temples
- Sun hats, strong tropical sun
