Mexico packing list for families

Mexico can be an easy beach week or a mix of beaches and colonial cities. The coasts are hot almost all year, while Mexico City, Oaxaca, and San Miguel sit high in the mountains and cool off fast at night, so pick your stops and the list adjusts.

Kristina's notes on Mexico

  1. The Caribbean coast (Cancún, Riviera Maya, Tulum) and the Pacific coast (Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita) are a flight apart. For a first trip with kids, I pick one coast and add a city only if it's a short hop.
  2. Mexico City, Oaxaca, and San Miguel de Allende are all over 5,000 feet. Days are sunny and warm, but mornings and evenings are cool, so pack a sweater and long pants even when the beach part of your trip is hot.
  3. Many cenotes and eco-parks ask for biodegradable sunscreen or none at all, and the sun is strong everywhere. I pack mineral sunscreen and UPF swim shirts so kids need less of it.
